Welcome to the LOP Annual Triathlon
More than a Quarter Century of Triathlon Tradition.

LOP Labor Day Weekend Triathlon :

Each year since the 2001 season, when the Association took over the reigns of running the Triathlon from the Rec and Ski Club, we have tried to make changes that would help make the event safer (reversing the direction of the bike and run courses; providing buoys and non-motorized escort craft for the swim) and also to offer an event that was still challenging to the participants.  We wanted the event to mature into a more classic Triathlon atmosphere (transition area, bike racks, etc.) without losing its local community character.  After all, we have one of the longest running triathlon events in the country, and we want to keep that tradition and record going.

To continue with these goals we are offering three, entry level triathlons:
The Long Course Tri is close to a standard Sprint Event (see distances
below).  The Medium Course Tri is our Traditional Triathlon (see distances below) and is the triathlon that we have been running for more than a quarter centurythe past 26 years - since 1982.  The Short Course Tri is our newest event.  In this event offering we are reaching out to the true entry level triathlete.  Maybe your husband or wife is the triathlete in the family.  Here's your chance to try and complete a triathlon and experience what your spouse or other family member has been going through.  The ShortCourse Tri also serves well the youngsters in our families as well as our older generations - the folks upwards of 50+.  Our goal is to create a course that will encourage more of our community, both younger and older triathlete wannabees, to step up and try to complete a triathlon right here
at home.
The distances for the Medium Course Tri are .6 mile swim, 5.1 mile bike (1 lap), and a 3.8 mile run.  The distances for the Medium Course do not make a lot of sense in terms of balance or in comparison with other triathlon distances, but it is the traditional, original triathlon course, and we want to continue its availability.

The distances for the Long Course Tri are: .6 mile swim, 15.2 mile bike (3 laps), and a 3.8 mile run.

The distances for the Medium Course Tri are .6 mile swim, 5.1 mile bike (1 lap), and a 3.8 mile run.

The distances for the Short Course Tri are: .25 mile swim (400 meters), 2.5 mile bike, and a 1.4 mile walk/run.

We use a five-point microchip timing system from Buzzword Productions® .  This will give triathletes a split for each leg of the triathlon plus a split for the T-1 and T-2 transitions.  We have used this system since 2004 to great success.

The combined field for these three triathlons will be limited to the first
300 athletes to sign up.  For the first time in the long history of the Lake of the Pines Triathlon, in 2008 we met our race quota of entries early in our sign up period.  As this event gains recognition and becomes more popular we encourage interested participants to register as early as possible.  Our registration site on active.com ®
generally opens on January 1st of each year or very close to it.  The earlier you register the better, because if you can register before our August pre-registration date expires (usually around the 9th-11th), you will gain in two areas: 1) a guaranteed t-shirt of the correct size, and 2) a reduced entry fee.

The races are in a rolling hill setting within the Sierra Foothills. The
bike and run are moderately hilly. We estimate the water temperature range to be between 75-80 degrees and the average high air temperature is 87 with a low of 58 degrees.  The water temperature is measured at 2 feet below the surface on race day an  hour before the start of the event.  2001-2008 the Lake water temperature has ranged from 75 to 78.9 degrees.  In five of those six years the water temperature was 77+ degrees Fahrenheit.

The race starts at 8:00am Saturday of Labor Day Weekend. It's always a good idea to show up as early as you can.  Registration processing begins at 6:00 am.   Be sure to read all the directions and instructions including Race Rules on this web site.  We’ve tried to present all the information you will need to have a fun and successful race experience.
