On July 24, 1973, a group of women led by Marie Conti and Marilyn Goodwin organized the Firebelles as a womens auxiliary for the LOP volunteer fire department. The purpose was to help provide necessities for the firefighters. Agnes Wolfe says she was one of seven women at the meeting, and that she was the one who proposed the name Firebelles.
After the establishment of the Higgins Fire Protection District and the disbanding of the LOP volunteer fire department in the early 1980s, the group turned its attention to LOP Association needs not covered by the budget. Today the Firebelles, a club of friendship and social interaction, organize numerous fundraising events that benefit the entire community.
